Hey everyone! It's a bit early to say this in Toronto, but I know we have people in 25 different time zones in this community, so for those of you, who're at the verge of 2017 - wish you all a happy and prosperous New Year! I have a feeling 2017 will be absolutely epic!

Hello friends! Just wanted you to know that The Open Mic now has a forum and it's pretty bad-ass :) So, if you prefer a more traditional way of communication you're more than welcome to join our forum and start discussions there! Here's a link to our forum:

P.S.: I've also recorded a video that shows how our forum works. Feel free to check it out:

Howdy friends! Just a quick note: our new forum is now live and kicking! It's still in beta, but I invite all of you to take it for a spin and has some great functionality and great design behind it!

Hello friends! I hope you had a lovely start of the week. Just wanted to share a few things:

1) There's a poll on Twitter. Please take a look, once you got a minute. It will help me figure out what should we build next: https://twitter.com/OpenMicXL8/status/799650851107155968

Seems like a lot of folks want a forum and profiles for clients, and I'm happy to report that both are currently in development.

Profiles for clients is something I wanted to build from day one but then I had to push it indefinitely until I figure out a proper workflow, permissions and overall user experience for them (let alone an insane amount of copywriting that it entails: onboarding, engagement, educational emails, separate FAQ section, separate landing pages, etc).

BUT I already have built a few things over the weekend (they landing page in particular which looks super sleek) :)

As far as forum goes, I'm hiring a developer to help me set things up. Hopefully we'll have a beta soon :)

Once again huge thank you to all the Open Mic donors! We've managed to raise $902 over past week, which is huge! Thanks for all your support.

The best is yet to come!

P.S.: If you'd like to support the development of The Open Mic you can do it right here: https://theopenmic.co/donations/

#DeveloperDiary,
Hello friends! First of all, huge thank you to all the wonderful donors who has supported The Open Mic during the first week of our crowdfunding campaign. You're awesome!

Shout-out to: Tracy Peel, Kozue Macmichael, Becky Pearse Romera, Aurélie Perrin, Claudia Botero, Enrico Antonio Mion, Maria Bertilsson, @Francesca D'Asdia, Liliya Rusavskaya, Domenico Trimboli, Mariann Makrai, Laura Cattaneo, Lorena Santonocito, Elise Hirsch, Ana Lourenço, Silvia Giancola, Pieter Beens, and Daniele Giulianelli.

We only raised 1% of what we need so far, but in my books it's a tremendous success and a great start. So, huge thank you to everyone, who's donating and helping me promote this campaign. You're awesome!

But back to the development news. I made a few minor changes to our menu for the sake of usability. Lots of time people ask me: how do I find topics on a specific subject, like CAT Tools, for example? Well now you can do it by going to Menu > Community > Stories and choosing the topic that tickles your fancy :)

I hope that it would make reading a little bit more enjoyable for all of our awesome readers. :)

Ok, I need to get back to my translation work, those case reviews ain't gonna translate themselves. See you all in a bit!

Alrighty! It's been a hectic couple of weeks but we have finally launched a crowdfunding campaign to support the future development of this platform.

Together we can bring The Open Mic to entirely new level and with the help of the wonderful people of the translation community we can build this amazing digital home for all the translators out there.

You can find more info on our crowdfunding page here: https://theopenmic.co/donations/

Or if you're curious about Open Mic's future and our goals you can read more information here: https://theopenmic.co/future/

Thank you so much for your support! Big hugs from Toronto!

Let the bug hunt begin! Seems like we're having a bug with our FAQ/Knowledge Base section (our slider get in a way of displaying the content correctly). I'm trying to figure out what's causing it and hope to fix it today. Thanks for your patience and sorry for the inconvenience!

After a very refreshing weekend at a friend's wedding in Windsor I managed to pick up the development pace. It's been a rather productive Monday all around. Here are some of the changes:
- Updated our Trello board and changed a few tasks around (I've also updated our Roadmap page);
- Added a field where you can now add a link to your Xing profile;
- Added a new experimental field for JavaScript in your profiles (I'll write more about it later);

All of that while working on several video game localization projects. :)

P.S.: I'm also trying to use #Toggl to track my time and it's fantastic. Highly recommended!

P.P.S.: Here's a picture of me in world-famous Windsor sculpture park. Caption contest anyone? 😀

Dear friends! I've just published an article about the planned crowdfunding campaign to support the future development of The Open Mic. I shared my thoughts about business transparency, some of my personal struggles and the decision to raise funds.

There is also a very interesting discussion in the comments about accountability, business models, and legal implications. I'd love to hear your opinion on that. Thank you so much in advance!

Happy belated #InternationalTranslationDay my dear friends and colleagues! I hope you had a ton of fun celebrating this day. I spent an entire day in the air on my flight back to Canada from Russia (I was visiting my parents both of whom turned 50 last week). But I hope you guys made the most out of this day and didn't have to work!
Big hugs from Toronto!

I've added Civil Engineering as one of the available fields of expertise. You should see it when editing your profile. If this is something you specialize in you can now easily add it when editing your profile.

Dmitry Kornyukhov @Francesca D'Asdia Yep, I think I can add it as well. I'll add this on my to-do list. Hopefully I'll add it next week, but if I forget, feel free to send me a reminder or open a support ticket here: https://theopenmic.ticksy.com/submit/

Howdy friends! Seems like some of our members are having problems updating your profile. The easiest way to solve it is to use a different browser - Internet Explorer works the best. Sorry about that inconvenience. If you're ever in doubt just open a support ticket and I'll be happy to help. Cheers!

High-five to Elena Tereshchenkova for helping me track down and fix one of the nastiest bugs on our website. There was a bug where your messages sentbthough Contact Tab in user profiles were not delivered if you were logged in. Not anymore! We fixed it and now you can easily send emails to your colleagues when using Contact Tab.

New cool feature alert! Some of you've been wondering whether it's possible to add a subscription form at the bottom of your posts. Well, now it IS possible! This feature is experimental at the moment, but I've tested it rigorously and it should work without any problem.

If you're a blogger and you publish on The Open Mic AND use Mailchimp for your mailing list you can now add a signup form on The Open Mic so that when people read your Open Mic stories they could subscribe to your newsletter too.

Newsletters are pretty cool (when done right) and mailing lists are very important for any writer who wants to share their thoughts, raise awareness about important issues or simply connect with their audience in a meaningful way. I'm actually we'll be re-launching my own newsletter this Fall and it will be pretty epic (https://bestrussiantranslator.com/newsletter/), so I figured I'll give our amazing authors an opportunity to build their own mailing lists too.

What does it mean for readers: some of our authors will offer you to subscribe to their mailing lists if you enjoy reading their articles. Or you can ignore this, of course, the choice is always yours.

To all bloggers and authors: if you want to add a subscription form to the bottom of your posts on The Open Mic, simply complete this form: https://theopenmic.co/signup-form/

Hey awesome people of The Open Mic Family! I haven't been around lately, have I? Really sorry for not posting frequent updates about the development process. Truth be told, I was taking a break from The Open Mic development as I realized that I was running mostly on steam.

This is not the first time I did this. When you work so hard on something you tend to burn out and everything starts feeling like a huge drag. Luckily I have a super secret weapon: I can just switch to my other projects to get my creative juices up and running again. This is what happened last month when I decided that I need to dedicate some time to my professional website (it feels good to give back to the profession, but I also need to think about my own business too, if I really want to support all of my multiple side-projects).

I've just released a new version of my professional website and it's gorgeous. I got rid of all the clatters. The focus is on the reader and the message.

Here are some of the things that I’m working on:

- New onboarding process for my awesome clients (with some fantastic personalized automation sequences);
- New sales copy across all of my pages with a stronger emphasis on my major field of expertise (video game localization);
- New intuitive workflows to simplify communication with my clients and potential customers;
- New private dashboard for my existing clients so they could view and accept estimates and pay invoices online;
- New design of my blog;
- Exciting new weekly newsletter for my colleagues (it's going to be epic 💣);
- And many other tiny tweaks…

As you can imagine this kind of work takes a lot of time and it might take me a while before I'll be ready to switch back into the full Open Mic development mode.

BUT I'm still here every singe day. I still start my morning by reading all of the newly published stories. I still put all the effort into promoting those stories and make sure people read them, and of course I still nag new users every Sunday so they complete their profiles and extract the most value out of this free platform :)

I occasionally make a few changes here and there. If you want to keep track of the development just follow #DeveloperDiary here, on The Open Mic.

Thanks for reading and high-five from Toronto!

P.S.: You can view my new website here: https://bestrussiantranslator.com
