Know Your Worth: a Marketing and Negotiating Seminar for Interpreters 15 Reasons to Go

Greater than 2 minutes, my friend!

I’ve been following the Open Mic community and discussions for quite some time now, but haven’t posted much on the wall or in the community myself, maybe because I was simply waiting for a good story to share. And it looks like it finally came my way.

If you follow me on Twitter or LinkedIn, you’ve probably seen that I’ve been busy helping organize a marketing and negotiating seminar designed specifically for interpreters, to help them navigate the deep and often treacherous waters of the big world out there, and also to teach them (and remind those who might have forgotten) that they we are worth quite a lot.

The two-day seminar is called “Know Your Worth: Understanding Marketing and Negotiating for Interpreters“, and will be held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, 10 – 11 September. The seminar is aimed at any interpreter who wishes to improve relationships with clients and prospects, gain more respect – both for the interpreter and from the client, negotiate higher fees, and find out more about the European and the US markets.

Thinking of the best way to outline the topics that will be covered at the seminar, it occurred to me that simply listing questions or ideas might be a bit boring, so I thought it might be a much better idea to give you some of the reasons as to why joining us next month would be a smart decision.

And here are some of the reasons I’ve managed to come up with:

1. You’ll get to meet new colleagues from different parts of the world who have different language combinations and many different stories to share.

2. You’ll make new connections.

And that’s important because networking is one of the most important things in the profession.

3. So yes, networking.

4. You’ll learn about marketing and the various markets out there
And you’ll meet the people who work some of these markets and who can share some firsthand experience with you.

Which brings me to the next one.

5. Experience. You’ll be able to share your experience and draw important lessons from that of other people. Because often that’s the best way to learn.

6. You’ll learn about negotiating and some important do’s and don’t’s.

7. Speaking of which, you’ll hear about a lot of different do’s and don’t’s, and, quite frankly, sometimes the don’t’s are worth so much more than the do’s, mainly because they probably came at a higher price.

8. You’ll learn a hell of a lot about brands and branding.

9. And we’ll talk about that reputation thing too.

10. We’ll talk about clients, and we’ll talk about how to talk to them. It may seem at times that they are a completely different kind, or come from a different planet, or a different world, but in reality quite often it is simply the case that they need to understand and to be understood.

11. So we’ll talk about that: we’ll talk about explaining and understanding.

12. And we’ll talk about talking: the phrases to use, and the ones to avoid.

13. And we’ll talk about presentation.

14. And, as you’ve probably learned from reading our about page, we’ll discuss pricing and ‘coopetition’, which is really something that needs discussing.

15. And finally, if you’ve never been before, this will be your ultimate excuse to visit St. Petersburg… and meet new people, and make new connections, and learn new things… You get the idea.

The seminar is taught by Julia Poger (ATA, AIIC). The seminar language is English.
