SEO: You don’t need to stuff your…website

Greater than 2 minutes

Have you considered the benefits of SEO for your website? “Yes, but I do not want to stuff it with keywords”. This is the answer I usually get when I put forward that question.

Stuffing a website with keywords is a negative practice for search engines these days, not to mention the bad user experience that will drive off visitors from your site within seconds.

The cornerstone of Google´s algorithm is that internet users find the things they are looking for. If your answer to my question above is, “Yes, I want to do it!”, I invite you to find out what Google likes.

Fresh content with “stuffing” in the right measure

Add new and relevant pages to your website. For example, if you have just completed a new project about the benefits of vitamin E, why not write a case study on that?

Find long tail keywords that are relevant for you, and incorporate them in a way that engages organically with readers. The keyword must be on the title of your page, and it must appear in the first 100 words of the content.

Do not use the keyword excessively, as this may set off red flags with search engines.

On-page SEO

This will affect how your post or page will look in search results. If you use WordPress, you can use the intuitive plug-in provided by the platform and fill in the boxes. How can you fill in the boxes appropriately?

Off-page SEO

Quality backlinks will help you to rank highly on Google. Imagine you write an article for the university you studied at, or a digital newspaper; search engines consider that these websites are authoritative for many reasons (a lot of traffic, high quality backlinks, continuous new content…). Getting a backlink from these sources will help to make your website domain more authoritative.

You can also get blogs and websites from your colleagues or clients to link to your site, but this may not have a great effect for SEO unless they are authoritative. Nevertheless, you will benefit from the traffic your website gets through backlinks, so promoting your content in any way is worthwhile (as long as it is good quality and visitors read it!).

My view

I hope that you enjoy reading this post and that you learn a few tips to increase your visibility on Google.

Of course, it makes sense to hire a professional with expertise in this area to do a good job. If this is the case for you, you are now in a position to tell him or her what you would like.

But remember, search engines are like humans: they like high quality specialised content. This is why I believe that no one can write great copy for our industry better than a translator or copywriter.

  1. Great overview, David! I always choose a single key-word or phrase and try to integrate it in the title and then in the copy (body and headings). It should be noted that Google always gives priority to those website that have valuable content as opposed to sites stuffed with key-words.
Bottom line: write for people and not for robots and you won’t have to worry much about key-words and rankings. 🙂
